Admission requirements for post-secondary students outside Canada

Are you eligible to transfer?

To apply to UBC as a transfer student, you are strongly encouraged to have completed 24 transferable credits – with at least a C average (60% where 50% is a passing grade), or a grade point of 2.0.

  • Second year applicants must normally have successfully completed 30 credits and satisfied all promotion requirements for advancement to that year
  • Third year applicants must have normally have successfully completed 48–60 credits and satisfied all promotion requirements for advancement to that year

Applicants who apply with fewer than 24 credits will be evaluated on the basis of both final secondary school grades and the partial post-secondary studies completed. If this applies to you, you’ll need to meet all your high school’s curriculum requirements in addition to meeting the GPA for admission with the post-secondary courses you completed. High school requirements differ depending on where you’re coming from.

Unless otherwise indicated by the program you are applying to, academic standing is based on the average of all courses attempted, including failed or repeated courses.

Required transfer credit

From polytechnic institutes and institutes of technology

You must have completed a two-year diploma from a recognized institute of technology, polytechnic institute, or junior college. Be aware, though, that courses are generally not transferable.

From other institutions

You must present a minimum of one academic year of post-secondary study before applying to the second year of a program at UBC’s Vancouver campus.

A minimum of 24 transferable term credits (36 quarter credits) are required. However, you are strongly encouraged to complete at least 30 term credits (45 quarter credits) of study before applying. If you have less than 24 transferable term credits, you will be evaluated on the basis of both final secondary school grades and post-secondary grades.

You will be assessed on all academic courses taken, including failures and repeated courses. You will also be required to meet the competitive grade point average for the program to which you are applying.

After you apply

After you submit your application, you will receive an email that lists the documents that you and your post-secondary institution need to submit.
