Lopburi, Thailand
“UBC values the diverse and multicultural backgrounds of each student. Because of this, I never felt left out. It makes me feel like I am an essential piece of a jigsaw, and that the UBC community needs me to make it strong, and to make it UBC.”
Toronto, Canada
“The nature at UBC is unmatched! I am in constant awe that I go to such a beautiful campus. Walking down main mall, I am mesmerized by how green and stunning our campus is. It’s incredible to have beaches on campus. Especially with the ocean being a huge factor in why I chose Vancouver, knowing that I don’t have to leave campus to look out onto the ocean or go to the beach is amazing.”
Markham, Canada
“I found UBC to be a very inspiring place to be. The campus is incredibly beautiful and calming – even a quick walk around would improve my mood. You are also surrounded by people – both students and faculty – who are passionate about a variety of fields and are doing amazing work in them. Above all, I would say that studying at UBC encouraged a strong sense of curiosity and eagerness for learning.”
Morogoro, Tanzania
“The biggest impact of [the International Scholars] awards is that they have made higher education possible for me, which wasn’t something I ever visualized in my future as a first-generation and low-income student. If you had asked me while I was in my second year of university whether or not I would pursue graduate school, I would have said I don’t think that is something someone like me could do, given the costs of attendance. Hence, these awards are so impactful in changing the realities of students who come from backgrounds in which higher education is not the traditional pathway to success.”
Vancouver, Canada
“Being the first in my family to attend higher education, despite the barriers I had to overcome, meant that all the hours I put into my studies and extracurriculars paid off. My parents grew up in families that could barely afford dinner, let alone college educations. Going to university means never having to go through the hardships they endured and making their sacrifices worth it.”
Kelowna, Canada
“UBC is filled with many different identities and cultures, and I find it very valuable to interact with people with different perspectives and experiences from my own. Being in such a diverse place has helped me inform my own perspective of the world and I am grateful for all the connections I have made with different types of people to increase my understanding of this ever-changing world.”

More so than anything, I knew UBC was for me when I stepped on to campus for the first time for a campus tour, and had that “aha” moment. I had this overwhelming feeling that I had landed at my future home. I truly believe that the feeling I had that day was a sign that UBC was where I was meant to be, and now in my final year, that couldn’t have been more true!
UBC offers so much diversity in every sense of the word. I think our large student body allows everyone to find their community and explore passions they didn’t even know they had. I have taken classes that are so niche, like Environmental Health or Medical Anthropology, and have experienced everything from improv shows to cheese tasting and dance battles on campus.
I was excited that this university is so welcoming to Indigenous peoples, and that it has accepted me.
