Discover an essential understanding of people within the context of health and healing in today’s society while you prepare for a professional licensure as a registered nurse. As a professional nurse, and a graduate of this program, you will be qualified to provide professional nursing services, deliver health-education programs, and provide consultative nursing services to promote, maintain, and restore patient health.
What you'll learn
The four-year Nursing program prepares you to meet the professional practice requirements identified by the licensing body. Admission is open to high school and university transfer students, and the program also offers access points for Licensed Practical Nurses and Registered Nurses.
Experiential learning and research
As a student in the Nursing program, you can get active in the community through School Initiatives. In your third-year coursework you can practise alongside community health nurses working with community groups, and in fourth year you can extend your education further afield with practicum placements. You can conduct research throughout your degree as you engage in service learning projects and/or change projects, and in your fourth year you will also have the opportunity to do a Research Preceptorship, where you will work directly with a researcher.

Critical reflection of the historical, political, and socioeconomic evolution of nursing. Exploration of foundational theories, nursing practice standards, ethical principles, ethical decision making, and health law that guide evidence-informed professional nursing practice.
Practicum in community health nursing develops knowledge, skills, and abilities needed to provide to provide safe ethical nursing care health care within varied community settings with diverse populations. Students will draw on principles of social justice and the social determinants of health to engage in evidenced-informed community assessments, health promotion/illness prevention activities, and health teaching.
Explores the role of the nurse within the context of the global society and the changing health care environment. Develops knowledge of emerging health issues and trends, evidence-informed approaches and ethical concerns for nursing practice at the global level.
Explores ways nurses provide leadership, influence, create, and manage change for the promotion of health for individuals, families, groups, and communities within the context of society and the world. Canadian Health Care System is explored considering impact of global trends.

English-language requirements
English is the language of instruction at UBC. All prospective students must demonstrate English-language competency prior to admission. There are numerous ways to meet the English Language Admission Standard.
General admission requirements
IB Diploma Programme
- Completed IB Diploma, including at least three Higher Level courses.
IB Certificate Courses
- IB Certificate courses (Standard and Higher Level) may be used in an admissions average if you are graduating from a recognized high school curriculum that can be used as your basis of admission.
- IB Math Applications and Interpretations SL, or IB Math Studies, do not satisfy the math requirement for admission to UBC’s science-based programs, the Faculty of Management, the UBC Sauder School of Business, or the Vancouver School of Economics.
Degree-specific requirements: Nursing
- IB Math (Analysis and Approaches SL or HL, or IB Math Applications and Interpretations HL or SL, or IB Math Studies is acceptable)
